About Us

Who we are

A small, independently managed organisation in North West Sutherland.

Where we are

We are talking about the north-west corner of mainland Scotland. See our area

We are not the latest fad

Our present title and constitution may only go back a few years, but we have been around since 1961 in pretty much the same form. In 1997, we followed a popular trend by reconstituting ourselves as a limited company.

Our line of business

Our constitution states that we:-

(a) Foster, promote and support voluntary action in the parishes of Assynt, Eddrachilles, Durness, Tongue, Farr and Lairg;
(b) Promote the culture and general good of the community, particularly by means of community development and;
(c) Carry out other work deemed by law to be charitable.

Are we big?

No, very small. Our only office is in Strathnaver where two member of staff, a secretary and clerical assistant, work part-time. Our monthly news magazine, Am Bratach, which forms the main body of our work, commissions a fair proportion of work. However, most other work, including all that of the board of directors and quite often the staff, is carried out free of charge.

Who benefits?

The community as a whole. Voluntary organisations receive certain services free, or at low cost, but often members of the general public can tap into services too, usually at a favourable cost. Membership Services

Who pays?

Until 2002 the Scottish Office and later the Scottish Executive grant-aided most of our "core" work, but we now generate all our own revenue. Like other organisations, we may qualify for grants from the local enterprise company, national lottery and so on. We also depend heavily on unpaid volunteers.

How do we manage to contain our workload?

With difficulty. The remit is very wide and the pressures considerable. It helps greatly that we have a clear idea of what we think it important and of how we should approach the work. This vision thing

Legally speaking, where do we fit in?

In law, NWSCCA is a limited company with charitable status, without share capital. It is managed by a board of directors, appointed by the members.

We are not on our own

Although isolated geographically and surviving on a small budget, thanks to modern technology we keep in touch with many people and many organisations around Scotland and further afield. An increasing number of them enjoy the advantages of the World Wide Web and can be reached directly from this site. Web links
